As anyone who has ever travelled through Europe in a hire car will tell you, it is possibly the easiest continent in the world in which to enjoy a variety of countries and cultures from the comfort of your own vehicle. The reason for this is very straightforward, almost every major nation within Europe adheres to a simple set of common laws regarding the movement of vehicles between nations, this makes travel between countries extremely easy, quite often borders are no more than a sign post on the road, with no passport control or customs officials in attendance.
Certainly in Western Europe the situation is very simple, just jump in your hire car and go. All of the major rental car companies operate throughout Europe including Hertz, Budget, Europacar and Avis, all of these car hire companies are happy to arrange pick up and drop off points that cross national boundaries, meaning you are free to start your journey in one country and terminate it in your final destination. There are some very charming areas which are perfect for driving; the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain are particularly scenic and an ideal addition to any planned route of travelling Europe by car. A particularly popular route with English visitors is down through France, across the mountains in to Spain and then heading west in to Portugal before driving north again and getting the ferry back to the UK. Eastern Europe is less simple to travel but still possible. |
